Crushed stone on the I&M Canal Trail
Lemont grew up beside the Illinois and Michigan Canal, dug between 1836 and 1848. The Village of Lemont describes 6 miles of crushed-stone trail along the canal, with marked 2-mile, 5K and 5-mile loops from the downtown trailhead. Loose stone is kind to the knees but can roll an ankle or send a bike tire sideways.
An ankle that swells quickly after a misstep on loose gravel
A wrist that hurts after a fall from a bike onto an outstretched hand
A knee or elbow that took a hard hit and now hurts to bend
A foot that aches more with each mile, which can sometimes mean a stress injury in the bone
MedlinePlus lists swelling, bruising and trouble moving the area as typical signs of a fracture, and says a provider will likely order an X-ray to check. The main X-ray diagnostic imaging page explains what the test shows.

The Heritage Quarries Recreation Area runs along the canal, with access from Talcott Avenue or Stephen Street downtown. The village does not allow swimming, and only paddle, oar or electric-motor boats may use the water. Wet limestone edges and rocky launches are slippery, so falls onto a hand, hip or shoulder are the main risk.
Wear shoes with grip and keep children close to the path. If a hand, wrist or shoulder still hurts the next morning, or swelling grows, our clinicians can examine it and decide whether an X-ray is needed.
The village also bans hunting, alcohol and open fires at the quarries. Check its website for current rules before you launch a boat.

For young athletes: the FDA says children are more sensitive to radiation, so our clinicians X-ray a child only when the result will change care, with a parent or guardian present
For older adults: the CDC reports that more than one in four adults 65 and older falls each year, and falls can break a wrist, arm, ankle or hip
For everyone: tell us about X-rays you had recently elsewhere so pictures are not repeated without need
For Spanish-speaking families: some of our staff speak Spanish, so tell the front desk if that would help
Decide if it needs imagingPain right over a bone, a joint you cannot use, or swelling that keeps growing are reasons for an in-person exam. A video visit cannot take an X-ray.

Which of your clinics comes first when I drive up I-55 from Lemont, IL?
Taking I-55 to the Cass Ave exit in Darien and heading north, you reach 29 N Cass Ave, Ste A, first. That is our main clinic and the only one with X-ray. The Jewel-Osco clinic is farther north at Ogden Ave and does not have imaging.
I rolled my ankle on the canal trail on a Saturday. Do I have to wait until Monday?
No. Both of our Westmont, IL clinics are open Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM, and X-ray is available at the Cass Ave clinic during open hours. Rest, ice and raise the ankle first. Come in if you cannot put weight on it or the bone itself is tender.
Can you X-ray a shoulder after a fall at the quarries?
Yes, when a clinician thinks it will help. An X-ray can show a broken collarbone or upper arm bone and whether a joint is out of place. It shows little detail of the muscles and tendons around the shoulder, so the exam also guides the plan and any referral.
What should I wear for an X-ray after a run or ride?
Athletic clothes without zippers, snaps or reflective metal strips near the injured area are ideal. Take off rings, watches and fitness trackers on the hurt arm or leg. If clothing with metal covers the area, you may be asked to change into a gown.
Can I get a note for work or school after an X-ray visit?
Yes. Our clinicians can provide a work or school note on request at the end of the visit. Ask what activities to avoid and for how long, so your employer, coach or school nurse gets clear instructions. If you were hurt on the job, tell us so the visit is set up correctly.
