Cuts: Press firmly with a clean cloth. Rinse with running water, then cover. Don't dig for objects stuck in the wound.
Burns: MedlinePlus advises running cool water over a minor burn for 5 to 30 minutes. Don't use ice, butter or ointment on it.
Sprains: Rest the joint, apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth, and raise the limb above your heart.
Bites: Wash with soap and water for several minutes and note the animal's owner if you can.
Stings: Scrape a stinger out sideways with a card edge, then use a cold pack.
Not sure if a cut needs stitches? Wounds that gape open, are deep or have jagged edges usually need a closer look. Our guide when to worry about a cut explains more.

Injuries change with the seasons here. Knowing what is common can help you prevent it.
Winter: Icy sidewalks and driveways lead to wrist and ankle injuries from falls. Snow shoveling strains backs and shoulders.
Spring: Youth sports return, and so do sprained ankles and jammed fingers.
Summer: The Illinois Department of Public Health says ticks live in wooded areas and tall grass and weeds, like the trails in DuPage County forest preserves. Check yourself and your kids every few hours outdoors. Bee and wasp stings also peak.
Fall: Yard work brings cuts from tools and splinters from wood piles.
Yes. Our clinicians clean cuts and close them with stitches, skin glue or adhesive strips, depending on the wound. Cuts close more cleanly when treated soon after the injury, so don't wait until the next day if you can help it. Learn more on our cuts and laceration treatment page.
Can urgent care X-ray a broken bone?
Yes, at our main clinic. On-site X-ray is available only at 29 N Cass Ave, Ste A, in Westmont, IL. Our clinic inside Jewel-Osco does not have X-ray. We can splint many simple breaks and refer you to a bone specialist for follow-up when needed. See fracture evaluation.
Do I need a tetanus shot for a cut?
Maybe. MedlinePlus says a tetanus vaccine is generally recommended every 10 years, and you may need one sooner after a dirty or deep wound. If you don't remember your last shot, we can check and give a booster during your visit. Read do I need a tetanus shot?
Should I go to urgent care for a dog bite?
Yes, for most bites that break the skin. Animal bites carry germs from the mouth, so they need a careful cleaning and a check for infection risk and tetanus. We also ask about the animal's vaccines. Some bites need the ER instead; see the warning signs at the bottom of this page.
What should I do after a tick bite?
Remove the tick quickly with fine-tipped tweezers, pulling straight up. Wash the area and save the tick in a sealed bag if you can. Watch for a rash or fever over the next few weeks. Come in if you cannot get the tick out or a rash appears. See tick bite care.
“I had to visit the clinic on a Saturday and they were super fast, clean, kind and got me in and out of there fast even with an almost full waiting room! Michael at the front desk was super helpful and went out of his way to make sure I was taken care of and comfortable until I could be seen by the doctor. Definitely 5 star care!!”
