Physical at urgent care or with your regular doctor?

Both can work. A physical with your regular doctor builds a long-term record. A walk-in physical with us is handy when a form is due soon or you don't have a doctor yet.

Walk-in physical with us

  • No appointment needed, 7 days a week
  • Good for school, sports, camp and job forms on short notice
  • Can pair with a TB test, vaccine or non-DOT drug screen
  • We share results with your doctor when you ask

Your regular doctor

  • Tracks growth and health changes over years
  • Manages long-term conditions and medicines
  • Does age-based screening on a set schedule
  • Want one here? See our primary care service

The Illinois Department of Public Health requires a health exam within one year before kindergarten or first grade, on entering sixth and ninth grades, before preschool and when a child enrolls in a new school. The exam goes on the state Certificate of Child Health Examination. IDPH notes proof may be given to the school before October 15 of the year it is required.

Sports physicals are separate. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends scheduling one at least 6 to 8 weeks before an activity starts, which leaves time for any follow-up. It checks heart health, bones and joints, past injuries and concussion history. Our article sports physical vs. regular physical explains the difference.

School forms pile up in the weeks before classes start. Coming in June or early July leaves time for any follow-up.

Vaccines, TB tests and travel visits

Vaccines

We give vaccines to children and adults based on the CDC schedules. The CDC recommends a flu vaccine every year for adults, and a tetanus booster every 10 years. Vaccine supply changes during the year, so call (630) 324-6825 to confirm we have the shot you need.

TB tests

We offer the TB skin test and the TB blood test. The skin test needs a second visit in 2 to 3 days so we can read it, and our 7-day hours make that easier. The blood test needs one visit for the draw. See our tests and lab work page.

Travel visits

The CDC advises seeing a provider at least 4 to 6 weeks before you leave the country, since some vaccines take time to work. Bring your itinerary and vaccine records.

Physicals for work (non-DOT only)

Many jobs ask for a health check before you start. We do non-DOT pre-employment physicals, non-DOT drug testing, return-to-work exams and TB tests for new hires. We do not offer DOT physicals or DOT drug tests for commercial truck and bus drivers.

Employers can set up an account and send staff to us. Start on our occupational medicine page, and read what disqualifies you from a pre-employment physical.

Common questions

Do you do DOT physicals?

No. We do not offer DOT physicals or DOT drug tests for commercial drivers. Our employment physicals and drug screens are non-DOT only, which covers most office, warehouse, retail, health care and manufacturing jobs. If your job requires that federal exam, you'll need a certified medical examiner.

What should I bring to a school physical?

Bring the Illinois Certificate of Child Health Examination if your school gave you one, your child's vaccine record and any glasses or contacts. Fill in the health history at home if you can. A parent or guardian should come with the child. We check the vaccine record against the CDC schedule and tell you what is due.

Is a sports physical the same as a regular physical?

Not quite. A sports physical focuses on whether it is safe to play: heart health, joints, past injuries and concussions. A regular checkup looks at overall health, growth and preventive care. Many families do both in one visit. Our sports physicals page explains what is checked.

Can I get a TB test and a physical in one visit?

Yes. We can do a physical and start a TB test at the same visit. If you get the skin test, you return in 2 to 3 days for us to read it. If your form allows a TB blood test, one visit for the blood draw is enough. Bring your form so we choose the right test.

Do I need an appointment for a physical?

No. Physicals are walk-in at both of our Westmont, IL clinics, 7 days a week. You can also book a visit online to reserve a time at our Cass Ave clinic. Self-pay visits start at $125; see our cost and insurance page for coverage details.
