A sports physical, also called a preparticipation physical evaluation, checks whether it is safe for an athlete to train and compete. Urgent Care Center of Westmont, also known as Immediate Care Center of Westmont, offers walk-in sports physicals for students and adult athletes in Westmont, IL.
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests getting the exam at least 6 to 8 weeks before the season starts. That leaves time for any extra tests or treatment. If your child has a pediatrician, please share our findings with them so their records stay complete.
According to the AAP, a sports physical looks at heart health, mental wellness, bones and joints, and past injuries. For female athletes, it also covers menstrual health and nutrition.
Bring the form your school or league requires, with the history section filled out. A provider reviews it with you, examines the athlete and signs the form when cleared. If we find a concern, such as high blood pressure or a heart murmur, we explain it and may suggest follow-up before full clearance.
Need a school form too? We can often do a school physical in the same visit. Walk in or check in online to save your place.
An athlete with a known or suspected concussion should not return to sports until a health care provider clears them. Tell us about any past head injuries, even mild ones.
Call 911 if an athlete collapses, has chest pain or trouble breathing, or has a seizure. After a head injury, the CDC says to get emergency care for repeated vomiting, a headache that gets worse, slurred speech, weakness or numbness, one pupil larger than the other, confusion, or drowsiness they cannot shake off. Go to the nearest emergency room.
