Tuberculosis (TB) testing shows whether you have been infected with TB germs. Many jobs, schools and programs require it. Urgent Care Center of Westmont, also known as Immediate Care Center of Westmont, offers two kinds of TB tests in Westmont, IL: the TB skin test and the TB blood test, also called an IGRA.
If you have a TB skin test, plan to come back in two to three days so we can read it. Our clinic is open seven days a week, which makes the return visit easier to fit in. You can walk in or check in online for either visit.
A small amount of testing fluid is placed just under the skin of your forearm. The CDC says you return in two to three days for a provider to check the site for a reaction. The test is not complete until it is read.
A blood sample is taken and sent to a lab. The test measures how your immune system reacts to TB proteins. It needs only one visit for the draw. The CDC notes that TB blood tests are not affected by a past BCG vaccine, so they are often preferred for people who received BCG.
Your employer or school may require one type. Check your paperwork before you come in.
We review your reason for testing, your health history, and any past TB tests or BCG vaccine. A provider helps choose the right test if your form allows either. After your test is read or your lab result returns, we explain what it means and complete your form.
A positive result means TB germs are likely in your body. It does not tell whether you have inactive (latent) TB or active TB disease. More tests, such as a chest X-ray, are needed. A negative result means TB infection is unlikely, though your provider may test further if you have symptoms or a recent exposure.
People with latent TB have no symptoms and cannot spread it. Treatment can keep latent TB from becoming active disease. If you need follow-up, we will guide you on next steps.
